Early Life:
Mike Nelms grew up in Buffalo City, New York. He says it was a hard time growing up there. He says that if you can make it in Buffalo, you can make it anywhere. Mike attended Howard College in Washington DC, where he studied administration of justice and psychology. He says the experience at Howard College was beautiful. It made him think about the world differently and gave him a new perspective.
After graduating with dual degrees from Howard University, Mike worked as a federal clearance at the Department of Defence in Washington DC. He worked there for four years before moving to Atlanta. Mike has lived in Atlanta for many years and considers the city his second home. After moving to Atlanta, he tried several business ventures, and one of these businesses was his medical firm. From this experience, he knew that if you open one business and be halfway successful, the concept is the same: getting up early, putting all your pride in ownership, and treating your workers right.
While running a medical firm, Mike started his trucking business simultaneously. It was a dispatch company. He says that dispatching is like the nucleus of trucking. Once you learn to dispatch, you learn everything you need to know about the rest of the business. Mike states that he started dispatching with Box trucks because they are the cheapest way to get into trucking.
Interaction with TN’H:
In a conversation with Truck N’ Hustle, Mike Nelms talks about starting and owning multiple businesses, eventually leading him to start a trucking company. Mike is a well-known multi-preneur who helps others to create their own trucking businesses and do it for free. He discusses the origins of his dispatch company and how he started out with just box trucks before transitioning to semi-trucks.
Mike described how he managed to grow his business, the type of freight he carried, and where he found the loads. He says that when someone establishes a relationship with some of these brokers, they should isolate themselves from other brokers and stick to that one in particular. He said that this strategy helped him to move more freight than he would have been able to otherwise. Mike is a Growth Hacker, and in this interview, he shares the secret behind his 12-box truck growth. Mike outlines our own formula for growing such an ambitious amount of inventory in just one year.
Mike not only spoke of his success but also of the challenges he faced while starting his business. One of the biggest lessons he has learned is to learn the business before investing in it. He advised aspiring entrepreneurs not to be in a rush to buy their trucks because when they start rolling for four to five months, they cannot get good value for their money. Mike says that trucking is the most complex business he has ever encountered.
Final Thought:
In his final thought, Mike Nelms noted that it is important to identify one’s purpose in business. He said, “Find your purpose. Whenever you’re doing any type of business, find your purpose. Don’t start a business just to get paid; you have to have a purpose behind it. That’s what’s going to drive you.”
